I work as a funeral director myself, so I know how important the job is.
I've seen first-hand what funeral directors do for families during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. I've seen the care, time and attention that goes into arranging a funeral and supporting people when they need it most.
That's one of the reasons I started Agnew Digital.
I wanted to use my experience in the funeral profession alongside my knowledge of web design and SEO to help independent funeral directors reach more families who need their help.
Because being a great funeral director is one thing. Being found by the people who need you is another.
Why I believe SEO matters for funeral directors
When someone needs a funeral director, they may not know who to call.
They might ask a friend or family member for a recommendation. They might already know a local funeral home. But increasingly, people will also turn to Google. They may search:
- Funeral directors near me
- Independent funeral directors near me
- Funeral directors in [town]
- Funeral home in [town]
- Local funeral directors
- Funeral costs [town]
- Cremation services [town]
- Burial services [town]
If your funeral home doesn't appear when someone makes those searches, another funeral director could get the enquiry instead.
And that's something I think about quite differently because I've worked in the profession myself. I know that behind every search is potentially a family who needs help.
This isn't just another customer looking for a plumber or a new pair of shoes. It could be somebody who has just lost their mum. It could be a husband trying to arrange his wife's funeral. It could be a family who has never had to organise a funeral before and doesn't know where to start.
That's why I believe getting your funeral home found online matters. It's not about chasing clicks. It's about making sure families can find a funeral director they can trust when they need one.
Why independent funeral directors need a strong online presence
Independent funeral directors have something that I believe should be at the heart of their websites and marketing.
They are personal. You're not just a name on Google. You're a person. You're part of your local community.
You may have built relationships with families over many years. You may have cared for several generations of the same family. That is incredibly valuable, and your website should communicate it.
I've seen websites where an independent business has all the right information but feels completely corporate and impersonal. For a funeral director, I don't think that's the right approach. Your website should feel like an extension of your funeral home. It should give families a sense of who you are, how you work and what they can expect from you.
Your website should feel like you
If I'm helping an independent funeral director with their website, one of the things I'd want to understand is: what makes your funeral home different?
It could be your history. It could be your family. It could be your local knowledge. It could be the way you support families. It could simply be the personal service you provide. Whatever it is, it should come through on your website.
- Show people who you are
- Introduce your team
- Use genuine photographs
- Talk about your history
- Explain your approach
- Tell people about the areas you serve
- Explain what happens when someone calls you
These things help create trust. They also create something that a generic website can't easily replicate: original information about your business and your experience. That's important for SEO, but more importantly, it's important for the families reading your website.
I know how important the job is
This is something I don't want to lose sight of with Agnew Digital.
SEO can become very technical. You can spend hours talking about keywords, search rankings, page speed, structured data and Google Business Profiles. All of those things have their place. But ultimately, we're talking about funeral directors helping families.
I know how important that work is because I've done it. That's why I don't want to create websites that simply look good or rank well. I want to help funeral directors reach more of the families who need their services.
If a better website means somebody finds a local independent funeral director instead of a business they know nothing about, then I see that as a positive. If a useful article answers a family's question at 11pm when they don't know what to do, that's valuable. If a clear website gives someone the confidence to pick up the phone and ask for help, that's valuable too.
That's the approach I want to bring to Agnew Digital.
Why local SEO is so important
Funeral services are local. A family isn't normally looking for a funeral director hundreds of miles away. They're looking for someone in their area. That makes local SEO particularly important for independent funeral homes.
If you serve a particular town and surrounding villages, your website should make that clear. For example, you may want to appear for searches such as "funeral directors in [town]", "independent funeral directors [town]", "funeral home near me" or "funeral directors [county]".
The exact searches will depend on your location and the services you provide. The important thing is understanding what people in your area are actually searching for and making sure your website provides the right information.
What SEO actually does
SEO stands for search engine optimisation. In simple terms, it's about making your website easier for Google to understand and more useful for the people visiting it. That involves things such as:
- Choosing the right keywords
- Creating useful content
- Improving your website structure
- Optimising individual pages
- Improving website speed
- Making your website mobile-friendly
- Improving internal links
- Optimising your Google Business Profile
- Building local relevance
- Making sure search engines can properly crawl your website
None of these things on their own will suddenly make your funeral home number one on Google. Good SEO is about bringing them together.
SEO should never come before people
This is something I strongly believe.
I've worked in a profession where communication matters enormously. When someone is grieving, you don't overwhelm them with complicated language. You explain things clearly. You listen. You give them the information they need.
I think websites should work in much the same way. Don't write your website for Google. Write it for the family who has just arrived on your website looking for help. Then make sure the website is structured properly so that Google can understand it too. That's a much better approach to SEO.
Answer the questions families are actually asking
One of the simplest ways to improve a funeral director's website is to answer the questions families have. Think about the questions you hear regularly. They could include:
- What happens when someone dies?
- What should I do if someone dies at home?
- How do I arrange a funeral?
- How much does a funeral cost?
- What is the difference between burial and cremation?
- What is a direct cremation?
- Can I personalise a funeral service?
- How long does it take to arrange a funeral?
- What happens at the funeral home?
These questions can become useful pages and articles on your website. And because they're based on the questions you actually hear from families, they're much more likely to be useful than generic content written purely to target keywords.
Your experience is valuable content
This is one of the biggest advantages an independent funeral director has.
You have years of experience answering questions that people are searching for online. You know what families worry about. You know what they don't understand. You know which parts of arranging a funeral can be confusing. You know the questions people are sometimes too nervous to ask.
That experience can be turned into genuinely useful website content. For example, instead of writing a generic article about arranging a funeral, you could explain: "The first five things I would tell a family who has just lost someone."
That is far more personal. And it gives a family something useful while demonstrating your experience.
Why I started Agnew Digital
My experience as a funeral director is a big part of why Agnew Digital exists.
I've seen how much independent funeral directors do for their communities. I've seen the difference a caring, experienced funeral director can make to a family. And I've also seen how important it is for families to be able to find the right funeral director in the first place. That's what I'm passionate about helping with.
I want to help good funeral directors reach more families. Agnew Digital combines my experience within the funeral profession with web design and SEO. That means I can look at a funeral director's website from two different perspectives: I can think about the family using the website, and I can think about how Google sees the website.
Both matter. A website needs to be easy for Google to understand, but it also needs to feel right for someone who may be going through an incredibly difficult time.
My approach to funeral director SEO
I don't believe in promising instant number-one rankings. I don't believe in filling a website with hundreds of meaningless articles. And I don't believe every funeral director needs exactly the same website or SEO strategy.
Instead, I start by understanding the business. Where are you based? Which areas do you serve? What services do you offer? What makes your funeral home different? What are people searching for? What does your existing website do well? Where is it letting you down?
From there, I can build a strategy around the things that actually matter. That might mean improving the existing website. It might mean rebuilding it. It might mean creating better service pages. It might mean improving your local SEO. It might mean creating useful content. Or it could be a combination of all of these things.
The goal isn't just more website visitors
This is important. I don't think the goal of funeral director SEO should simply be "let's get more people onto your website." What's the point in thousands of visitors if none of them need your services?
I'd much rather help an independent funeral director appear when somebody in their local area is actively looking for a funeral director. That's the traffic that matters. The person searching "independent funeral directors near me" is much more valuable than somebody randomly clicking on a blog post from another part of the country.
Good SEO is about attracting the right people, not just more people.
Your website should make it easy to contact you
Once someone finds your website, make it easy for them.
Your telephone number should be obvious. Your contact details should be easy to find. Your address should be clear. Your services should be easy to understand. Your website should work properly on mobile. And visitors shouldn't have to click through six different pages to figure out how to contact you.
Sometimes the simplest improvements can make a big difference.
Your Google Business Profile matters too
Your website isn't the only thing I would look at. Your Google Business Profile is an important part of local SEO. It's often one of the first things someone sees when searching for a local business. Your profile should have accurate:
- Business information
- Address
- Telephone number
- Website
- Opening hours
- Services
- Photographs
And, where appropriate, genuine customer reviews. Your website and Google Business Profile should work together to give people confidence that they've found the right business.
Why reviews matter for funeral directors
Choosing a funeral director is a decision based heavily on trust. People want to know that other families have been looked after. Genuine reviews can help with that.
If a family is happy with the service you've provided, you can politely ask if they would be willing to leave a review. There should never be pressure. But over time, those reviews can help demonstrate the reputation you've built offline and bring that reputation into your online presence.
SEO takes time
I always think it's important to be realistic about SEO. It isn't a switch you turn on. It isn't a guarantee of position one. And it shouldn't involve making unrealistic promises.
SEO is about improving your website and online presence over time. You create useful content. You improve the technical side of the website. You strengthen local visibility. You make the website easier to use. You monitor what's happening. Then you improve it again.
For an independent funeral director, that can become a long-term investment in the business.
If you're an independent funeral director
If you're a funeral director reading this and thinking "I'm not sure how well my website is actually performing," you're not alone.
Many independent businesses have websites that were built several years ago and haven't really been looked at since. The website might still look fine. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's doing everything it could be doing.
You may not be appearing for important local searches. Your competitors may be getting the visibility that you should have. Your website may be difficult to use on mobile. Or you may simply not know where to start with SEO.
That's where I can help.
